THE FEZZAN

The Fezzan is the heart of the Sahara desert and it encompasses the South West corner of Libya. It covers the Ubari Sand Sea, the Murzuk Sand Sea and the Jebel Akakus mountains. The Fezzan is an area of the size of Spain and it was called Phasania by the Romans.  Among this sea of multicolour sand dunes and valleys you will find idyllic lakes with palm trees which constitute one of the most beautiful desert scenery in the world.

The volcanic Akakus Mountains rise up from the sand creating beautiful geological scenery as rock arches, sharp canyons with sand cliffs but it is most famous for its rock art from 10,000 BC when the Sahara was a great savannah, and elephants and giraffes roam around as depicted on the rocks. The area has been listed as Unesco World Heritage Site for the preservation for future generations and it is the great attraction in the Sahara.

The present inhabitants of the area are the nomadic Touareg, although most of the families have settled in the towns to avoid the hard condition of the desert and work as guides due to their exclusive knowledge of the desert.

2500BC the great savannah started becoming arid and the vegetation started changing due to a total lack of rainfall and over a period of 1500 years it became the desert that we see today. The Fezzan became the normal route for the camel caravans to bring the products of Central Africa to the cities in the Mediterranean.

The Garamantian Empire (900BC-AD500) a loosely confederation of tribes located in urban centers that were using the underground water channels (foggara) to make the desert bloom around their oases. Due to a dried up of the underground the Garamantes abandoned their urban centers and became nomads

The period of our visit was chosen in order to avoid the subzero night temperatures that last up to the 15th of February and the beginning of the sand storms at the middle of March. During our visit the expected night temperatures will range between 0 and 10C while day temperatures will be between 20 and 25C, no rain or sand storms are expected.
